Sample verdict card
Verdict
Negotiate
On paper ₹22L looks fine, but the 24-month joining clawback and 90-day notice push the realistic value down to p25 for SDE-2 @ Bangalore with 4 yrs YoE.
Push fixed by ₹2L
"Thanks — I'm excited. Given my 4 yrs and parity with SDE-2s at peer cos, I was hoping to land at ₹18L fixed. Can we revisit?"

What the roast checks

Paste the offer letter — or the CTC breakup table from it — and the roast reads it the way a sceptical friend in HR would. It splits the headline number into fixed pay, variable pay, joining bonus, retention bonus and ESOPs, and turns that into a realistic in-hand figure per month. It places the fixed component against a market band (the 25th, 50th and 75th percentile from our curated India salary anchors for that role, city and experience) and returns one of four verdicts: land it, negotiate, walk away, or get clarity first.

Then it lists the red flags and hidden traps it found, gives you negotiation scripts written to be pasted into a reply to HR, and a short list of questions to ask before you sign.

Why CTC is not your salary

In India the cost-to-company figure is everything the employer spends on you, which is not what reaches your bank account. Employer PF and gratuity are inside it but never paid out monthly. Variable pay is a target, paid quarterly or yearly and often at 70 or 80 percent. A joining bonus is real money with a clawback clause: leave inside 12 or 24 months and you pay it back. ESOPs are worth their vesting schedule and the company's liquidity, not the number on the letter. Two offers with the same CTC can differ by ₹20,000 a month in hand, and that difference is what the roast is built to surface.

Using the scripts

The scripts anchor on fixed pay, because fixed is what compounds — every future raise and every counter-offer is a percentage of it. They quote your experience and the peer band rather than your current salary, and they stay polite, because the person reading them decides whether you start on the right foot. Copy one, change the numbers to yours, and send it before you accept anything verbally.

Frequently asked questions

Is Roast My Offer Letter free?
No — it is a Pro feature, from ₹199 a month for unlimited use or ₹49 for a single roast. The free tools on the site are the resume roast and the ATS score checker.
What should I paste?
The whole offer letter is best, because the traps live in the clauses: notice period, joining bonus clawback, ESOP vesting. If you only have the CTC breakup, paste that and the analysis will cover the numbers.
How accurate is the market band?
It is a band, not a promise. The anchors are curated for Indian roles, cities and experience levels; a p50 figure tells you where the middle of the market sits, and whether your fixed pay is above or below it.
