Fresher Salary in India

What freshers earn by role and city in 2026 — the LPA bands behind our salary pages, the city multipliers, what 3 to 6 LPA is in hand, and how to negotiate a first offer.

Every fresher salary question has the same shape: a role, a city, and a number that sounds too low to be true. The answer depends on all three, and the honest version is a band, not a point. This guide lays out the fresher bands behind our salary pages for all twenty roles, the city multipliers that turn a Bangalore offer into a Kolkata one, what a 3, 4 or 6 LPA offer is worth in hand each month, and how to negotiate when you have no leverage except a second offer.

Fresher salary by role: the Bangalore bands

These are the 0-2 year bands our salary pages use, for Bangalore, in lakhs per annum of CTC. Software engineer 4 to 8. Frontend developer 4 to 7. Backend developer 5 to 9. Full-stack developer 4 to 8. Data scientist 6 to 12. Data analyst 4 to 7. Product manager 10 to 18, though fresher PM roles barely exist outside a handful of campus programmes. UX designer 4 to 8. Marketing manager 3 to 7. Sales executive 3 to 6. Business analyst 4 to 8. DevOps engineer 5 to 10. ML engineer 6 to 12. iOS developer 5 to 10. Android developer 5 to 10. QA engineer 3 to 6. Content writer 3 to 5. HR manager 3 to 6. Graphic designer 3 to 5. Operations manager 4 to 7.

Two patterns sit inside that list. The bottom of almost every band is 3 to 4 LPA, because that is what a mass recruiter or a small company pays for any graduate regardless of the title. And the top of the band is set by skill scarcity, not by the job's importance: a data scientist or ML fresher at 12 LPA is being paid for a skill most graduates do not have, while a graphic designer's ceiling of 5 reflects how many people can do the entry-level version of the job.

Why the same job pays less in Kolkata: city multipliers

Our pages scale every band by city. Bangalore is 1.00. Mumbai, Hyderabad and Gurgaon are 0.95. Delhi NCR is 0.92. Noida is 0.88. Pune is 0.90. Chennai is 0.85. Ahmedabad is 0.78. Kolkata is 0.75. So a data analyst fresher band of 4 to 7 LPA in Bangalore becomes 3 to 5.3 in Kolkata, and a graphic designer's 3 to 5 becomes 2.3 to 3.8.

The multiplier is a rent story more than a talent story. A Kolkata offer at 3 LPA and a Bangalore offer at 4 LPA can leave the same money after rent, because a single room in Koramangala costs what a one-bedroom flat does in Salt Lake. Compare offers after rent and commute, not before. The exception is remote-first companies, which increasingly pay a single national band regardless of the city on your address; if an offer is remote, do not accept a Kolkata discount on it.

What a fresher offer is worth in hand

No fresher pays income tax. Under the FY 2025-26 new regime, the Section 87A rebate removes all tax up to ₹12 lakh of taxable income, and a fresher is nowhere near it. What leaves the CTC is provident fund on both sides, so the in-hand share is around 90%.

With the standard split our calculator uses (basic 40% of CTC, PF 12% of basic capped at ₹1,800): 3 LPA is ₹22,600 a month in hand. 3.5 LPA is ₹26,367. 4 LPA is ₹30,133. 4.5 LPA is ₹33,900. 5 LPA is ₹38,067. 6 LPA is ₹46,400. Professional tax, where your state charges it, takes up to ₹200 more. If gross is under ₹21,000 a month, which is true up to about 2.6 LPA, ESI deducts a further 0.75% and the employer contributes 3.25% on top. The LPA to in-hand guide walks through the full calculation and the table up to 50 LPA.

Where these numbers come from, and what they are not

The bands are our editorial estimates, last revised in September 2026. They are not a survey with a sample size, not scraped from any single job board, and not what any one company pays. Treat them as the range within which most real offers land, with a fifth of offers falling outside it on either side.

Three things push an individual offer outside the band. Company tier: a product company or a well-funded startup pays at the top or above it, a services company or a small firm pays at the bottom. Hiring channel: campus placement offers cluster tightly around a published figure, off-campus and walk-in offers are more scattered and usually lower for the same role. And a genuinely scarce skill, which for freshers in 2026 means applied ML, data engineering, security and iOS, can double the bottom of the band.

Negotiating a first offer

A fresher negotiates from almost no leverage, so the moves are small and specific. First, ask whether the CTC includes variable pay, a joining bonus, gratuity provision or a retention clause, and get the fixed component in writing; a 4.5 LPA offer with 1 lakh of variable is a 3.5 LPA offer. Second, ask about the review cycle: a lower offer with a confirmed six-month review often beats a higher one with an annual cycle. Third, a competing written offer is the only argument that reliably moves a fresher number, and even then the movement is usually 10 to 15%, not double.

Do not negotiate on the LPA headline when the real question is in hand. Use the calculator to convert both offers before you compare them, and ask about the city allowance if you are being relocated, because that is where a Bangalore offer can quietly become a Chennai one.

The resume that gets the offer

The band you land in depends on which companies shortlist you, and that is a resume problem before it is a negotiation problem. The fresher resume guide covers what fills a one-page resume with no work experience, and the walk-in interview resume page covers the version you carry in person, which is where most off-campus fresher hiring in India still happens. Once the offer is in hand, the salary pages for each role and city give you the mid and senior bands so you know what the second and third jobs should pay.

FAQ

What is the average fresher salary in India in 2026?

For most graduate roles the band is 3 to 6 LPA of CTC, which is ₹22,600 to ₹46,400 a month in hand. Software and data roles at product companies run 5 to 12 LPA; mass recruiters and small firms pay 3 to 4 regardless of title. There is no single average worth quoting because the spread between a services company and a product company is larger than the spread between roles.

What is a data analyst fresher salary in Kolkata?

About 3 to 5.3 LPA, which is the Bangalore band of 4 to 7 scaled by Kolkata's 0.75 multiplier. In hand that is roughly ₹22,600 to ₹40,500 a month with no income tax at that level.

Is 3 LPA a good salary for a fresher?

It is the floor of almost every band, and it is what a large share of first offers in India actually are. It is ₹22,600 a month in hand. Whether to take it depends on the company's review cycle and what the role teaches; a 3 LPA role at a firm that pays 6 after a year beats a flat 4 LPA one.

Why is a fresher salary lower in Kolkata and Ahmedabad than in Bangalore?

Because employers price to local rent and to the local supply of candidates, not to the value of the work. Kolkata sits at about 75% of Bangalore and Ahmedabad at 78% on our pages. After rent the difference is much smaller, and remote-first companies often pay one national band.

Do freshers pay income tax?

Not in FY 2025-26. The Section 87A rebate under the new regime removes all tax up to ₹12 lakh of taxable income, and a fresher salary is far below it. The only deductions are provident fund, professional tax where the state levies it, and ESI if gross pay is under ₹21,000 a month.
