LPA to In-Hand Salary

What 5, 8, 12, 17 and 25 LPA actually pay per month in FY 2025-26 — the CTC split, PF, the ₹12 lakh tax-free line, and why 13 LPA is barely more than 12.5 in hand.

An offer letter says 12 LPA. The first payslip says ₹96,400. Nobody lied; the two numbers measure different things, and the gap between them is where most salary disappointment in India comes from. This guide walks the ₹12 lakh from CTC to bank credit one deduction at a time, gives you the in-hand figure for every common LPA from 3 to 50 under the FY 2025-26 new regime, and explains the two places the maths behaves strangely: the ₹12 lakh tax-free line, and the cliff just above it that makes a 13 LPA offer barely better in hand than 12.5.

What LPA measures, and why the payslip never matches it

LPA is lakhs per annum of cost to company. CTC is everything the employer spends on you in a year: your basic salary, house rent allowance, the special allowance that makes up the rest, and the employer's own contribution to your provident fund. That last item is money you never see in a bank credit, yet it is inside the headline number. In some offers gratuity provision, insurance premiums and a variable bonus are inside it too.

In hand is what reaches your account each month after three things leave: the employer PF that was never really yours to spend, your own PF contribution, and income tax deducted at source. So in hand is always lower than CTC divided by twelve, and how much lower depends on the CTC split and on which tax slab the salary lands in.

The CTC split our calculator assumes

Our salary calculator, and every /salary page on this site, uses one standard structure so the numbers are comparable: basic salary is 40% of CTC, HRA is 50% of basic, employer PF is 12% of basic capped at ₹1,800 a month (the cap applies once basic crosses ₹15,000, which it does from roughly 4.5 LPA), the employee PF contribution matches it, and special allowance is whatever remains. Your own offer will differ in the details, and the section further down lists the differences that matter.

Take 12 LPA. Monthly CTC is ₹1,00,000. Basic ₹40,000, HRA ₹20,000, employer PF ₹1,800, special allowance ₹38,200. Gross salary, the figure on the top line of the payslip, is CTC minus employer PF: ₹98,200. From that, ₹1,800 employee PF leaves, and then tax.

The tax step under the new regime, FY 2025-26

The calculator uses the new tax regime, which is the default and the better choice for almost everyone without large deductions. Taxable income is annual CTC minus the employer PF (₹21,600 at the cap) minus the ₹75,000 standard deduction. The slabs then apply: nothing on the first ₹4 lakh, 5% from ₹4 to 8 lakh, 10% from 8 to 12, 15% from 12 to 16, 20% from 16 to 20, 25% from 20 to 24, and 30% above ₹24 lakh. Health and education cess adds 4% on top of the tax.

Then the rebate. Section 87A wipes out the entire tax when taxable income is ₹12 lakh or less. For 12 LPA, taxable income is ₹11,03,400, so the tax is zero and in hand is ₹98,200 minus ₹1,800: ₹96,400 a month, 96.4% of the CTC. That is the arithmetic behind the number people find surprising: a 12 LPA salary pays no income tax at all in FY 2025-26.

LPA to monthly in hand: the table

All figures are monthly, with the split above, the new regime, and no professional tax. 3 LPA: ₹22,600. 3.8 LPA: ₹28,627. 4.5 LPA: ₹33,900. 5 LPA: ₹38,067. 6 LPA: ₹46,400. 7 LPA: ₹54,733. 8 LPA: ₹63,067. 10 LPA: ₹79,733. 12 LPA: ₹96,400. 12.5 LPA: ₹1,00,567.

13 LPA: ₹1,04,439 (annual tax ₹3,536). 15 LPA: ₹1,13,556 (tax ₹94,130). 17 LPA: ₹1,27,608 (tax ₹1,25,507). 20 LPA: ₹1,47,408 (tax ₹1,87,907). 25 LPA: ₹1,78,645 (tax ₹3,13,061). 30 LPA: ₹2,07,312 (tax ₹4,69,061). 34 LPA: ₹2,30,245 (tax ₹5,93,861). 40 LPA: ₹2,64,645. 45 LPA: ₹2,93,312. 50 LPA: ₹3,21,978 (tax ₹10,93,061, before the 10% surcharge that starts above ₹50 lakh of taxable income).

Read the percentages rather than the rupees if you are comparing offers. Below 12.5 LPA you keep 90 to 96% of CTC, because there is no tax and PF is a fixed ₹3,600 a month between the two sides. From 15 LPA the share drops to about 91%, at 20 LPA to 88%, at 30 LPA to 83%, and at 50 LPA to 77%. Every lakh added to a 30 LPA offer is worth about ₹5,700 a month in hand; the same lakh on a 10 LPA offer is worth about ₹8,300.

The ₹12 lakh line and the cliff above it

Because the rebate covers everything up to ₹12 lakh of taxable income, and taxable income is CTC minus about ₹96,600 of PF and standard deduction, a CTC of up to roughly ₹12.96 lakh pays no tax. That is why 12.5 LPA nets ₹1,00,567 with a tax line of zero.

One rupee over the line and the rebate is gone, and without a correction the tax would jump straight to ₹60,000 plus cess. The Income Tax Act prevents that with marginal relief: the tax cannot exceed the amount by which taxable income crosses ₹12 lakh. So 13 LPA, taxable ₹12,03,400, pays ₹3,400 plus cess, ₹3,536 for the year, and nets ₹1,04,439. The relief runs out around 13.7 LPA, after which the full slab tax applies: 15 LPA pays ₹94,130. In hand terms, 13 LPA is worth ₹3,900 a month more than 12.5, and 15 LPA is worth ₹9,100 more than 13. The 12.5 to 15 stretch is the flattest part of the whole curve, and it is worth knowing before you spend a negotiation fighting for 13 instead of 12.5.

What the estimate leaves out, and why your payslip is lower

Professional tax. Most states deduct it monthly, up to ₹2,500 a year, usually ₹200 a month, and some states, including Delhi and Haryana, do not levy it at all. It is not in the table because it depends on where you sit, not what you earn.

Gratuity carved out of CTC. Many offer letters include a gratuity provision of 4.81% of basic inside the CTC. It is only paid if you complete five years, so a 12 LPA offer with gratuity inside it pays about ₹1,900 a month less in hand than the table shows. Ask the HR whether gratuity is inside or over and above the CTC before you compare two offers.

Variable pay, joining bonus and retention bonus are usually quoted inside CTC and paid quarterly, annually, or never if targets are missed. The honest comparison is fixed CTC to fixed CTC. Employer NPS contributions, group insurance premiums, food coupons and a company car lease all sit inside some CTCs and reduce the cash component. And if gross is under ₹21,000 a month, ESI deducts 0.75% of it. Finally, a basic set at 50% of CTC instead of 40% changes HRA and PF slightly but not tax, so the in-hand figure moves by a few hundred rupees, not thousands.

Working backwards: the CTC that gives you a target in hand

The calculator also runs in reverse, and the round numbers are worth memorising for negotiations. ₹30,000 a month in hand needs about 4 LPA. ₹50,000 needs 6.4 LPA. ₹75,000 needs 9.4 LPA. ₹1,00,000 a month needs 12.4 LPA, which is why the lakh-a-month milestone is so much closer than people assume. ₹1,50,000 needs 20.4 LPA, and ₹2,00,000 a month needs 28.7 LPA, because by then tax is taking a third of every additional rupee.

If the new employer quotes CTC and you know the in-hand you need, state the in-hand and let them find the CTC. If they quote in hand, ask for the fixed CTC in writing so the figure cannot quietly include variable pay.

Using this in a negotiation

Negotiate on fixed CTC, not on the LPA headline, and know your in-hand figure before the call so a number like 13 LPA does not sound like a bigger step from 12.5 than it is. When a recruiter asks for your current CTC, give the fixed component and say so. When they ask for expected, quote a range whose bottom is the figure you would actually accept, and check what that bottom means in hand using the table above. The resume that gets you into that conversation is a separate problem, covered in the resume writing guide and, for first jobs, the fresher resume guide.

FAQ

What is 12 LPA in hand per month?

About ₹96,400 a month under the FY 2025-26 new regime, with basic at 40% of CTC and PF capped at ₹1,800 each side. There is no income tax at 12 LPA because taxable income stays under the ₹12 lakh Section 87A rebate limit. Professional tax, if your state levies it, takes up to ₹200 more.

What is 17 LPA in hand?

Roughly ₹1,27,600 a month. Annual tax is ₹1,25,507 under the new regime, and PF takes ₹3,600 a month between the employer and employee shares. Gratuity or variable pay inside the CTC would lower it further.

How much CTC do I need for 1 lakh in hand?

About 12.4 LPA. At that level there is still no income tax, so almost the whole gross salary reaches you. For ₹1.5 lakh in hand you need around 20.4 LPA, and for ₹2 lakh a month around 28.7 LPA.

Why is 13 LPA barely more than 12.5 LPA in hand?

Because the 87A rebate ends at ₹12 lakh of taxable income, and the marginal relief that softens the cliff phases out between about 13 and 13.7 LPA. 12.5 LPA pays no tax; 13 LPA pays ₹3,536; 15 LPA pays ₹94,130. The 12.5 to 15 stretch is the flattest part of the in-hand curve.

Does the calculator use the old or the new tax regime?

The new regime, which is the default from FY 2023-24 and the better choice unless you claim more than roughly ₹4 lakh of deductions under the old one. If you have a large home loan interest, HRA exemption and full 80C, run the old regime separately; the answer can flip above 20 LPA.
